Mentor texts:
teaching writing through children's literature, K-6
By Lynne R. Dorfman and Rose Cappelli
The purpose of this text is to share
specific titles of children’s literature that can move students outside of their
typical “writing box”. It gives teachers many mini-lesson ideas and a section
of each chapter is called the “Your Turn” lessons. The structure makes it
adaptable across the grade levels. I have just begun reading it so I will be
sharing more once I know more myself!
Writing
Workshop, The: Working through the Hard Parts (And They're All Hard Parts)
Author(s):
Katie Wood Ray, Lester L. Laminack
This is another fantastic
resource from Katie Wood Ray that gives more than a basic overview of the
Writing Workshop. Lester Laminack participates by sharing quotes and stories
from well known authors. In the beginning of the text we are reminded that in
order to be good teachers of writing we must be writers ourselves.

The Book Whisperer
Donalyn Miller and Jeff Anderson
Fabulous book about independent
reading, written by a 6th grade teacher from Texas. She offers
practical ideas and great motivation for teachers to get their students reading
MORE. I would recommend it to anyone who teaches grades 4 – 8 , and possibly
even high school teachers.

instruction – and succinct information about what will make a difference for our
students who struggle. Allington cites many research articles that can inform
our instructional practice. Find out why our struggling readers don’t get
better and what it means to have lots of high success practice. |
